Art: Lloyd Evans

graduated in 2004 from Northampton University with an Honours degree in Fine Art. Now a practising artist based at Stowmarket Artist Studios, I continue to work and exhibit nationally. Looking to take my work forward I am engaged in a variety of projects, including the creation of site specific works.

In my current work, I am using colour and form to play with the idea of representing three dimensional space and movement on the flat canvas. Using pattern as a framework from which pictorial space is subtly manipulated, either leading the eye into or out of the painting. The process of creating the work contains an element of chance where unexpected effects are explored and elaborated on, making a rich and varied surface. By utilising the unique techniques I have developed over the last three years, I creates optical effects. This enables an apparent movement, as the eye constantly tries to focus on the image.
The only representation in the work is that of three dimensional space. This means the qualities of brushmark and line are of paramount importance, creating a dialogue through which the viewer can connect with the work on a preverbal or subconscious level. I see this as an emotional response to the work’s aesthetic, where the term aesthetic covers a wide range of responses. This includes not only such qualities as the awkward, the garish, the bizarre or the kitsch, but even the apparent absence of any quality, as in the dull or indifferent.
