Actors and Techincal Staff Wanted for New Titus Andronicus Production!

Bard Company is a new Suffolk-based theatre company. They are planning a production of one of Shakespeare’s most violent and shocking plays Titus Andronicus for July 2010 and need fresh blood in the form of actors and technical staff to get involved now. Director Paul Pearce-Couch plans his production to have a modern look – 1984 meets Mad Max/Marilyn Manson – cutting the original script while keeping true to the play’s gory roots. Should be fun. Those interested should stock up on tomato ketchup ahead of the auditions on September 5–6. To rehearse their death scenes of course!
“Think of Titus Andronicus as ‘Shakespeare does Tarantino’”, says Paul. “There’s a lot spoken these days about how violence has saturated our TV and cinema screens, but it existed 400 years ago too, and Titus is a perfect example of how Elizabethan society enjoyed being shocked as much as we do.”
Titus Andronicus tells the story of a Roman general who returns home after a bloody victory over the fearsome Goths. He’s hailed as a hero, however, the celebrations quickly descend into deceit, jealousy and a series of barbaric atrocities. As the body count grows, Titus’ sanity begins to fracture. The result is a vivid gore-fest that was possibly Shakespeare’s most popular play during his time.
Paul continues: “However, beneath the overt brutality of Titus, is a fascinating story of treachery and revenge. It was extraordinarily well-written by a Shakespeare in his mid-20s and I’m sure that Suffolk’s more mature audiences will enjoy it for the intrigue, while younger audiences will probably be hoping to get splashed with a little of the blood, of which I promise there will be plenty!”
There are roles for males of all ages and several for mature females. Auditions for Titus Andronicus will be held in Ipswich on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6, 2009. Audition scripts are available beforehand.
